We’re partnering with Tini Lux Jewelry for this post. All opinions are my own.
One of my goals for 2018 is to create a wardrobe full only of clothing that I love. Right now, I feel like my wardrobe is pretty minimalist but I don’t necessarily own all the essentials nor does every item “spark joy” as Marie Kondo says. Since my wardrobe is already small, I thought I might start dabbling in the capsule wardrobe trend.
A capsule wardrobe is a seasonal wardrobe you curate with a select number of pieces that you can pair with each other. You’ll choose shirts that go with all your bottoms, dresses that match your sweaters, etc. so that you get the most out of your wardrobe.
You can choose a number of items that feels good for you. Though, there are particular versions of the capsule wardrobe like Project 333, which is 33 pieces of clothing for three months.
Capsule wardrobes have a lot of pros, like helping you curb your clothes spending. It also ensures that you love all your clothes and it all feels and look good on you. You can eliminate all that excess stuff that sits in your closet untouched anyway.
One of the cons is that when you create a capsule wardrobe, you repeat the same items often. And an important way to keep it interesting and fun is through pairing accessories with your wardrobe.
As I am narrowing down what I need to buy, what I own and can use multiple ways, one of the things I’m thinking about is what accessories I should buy and what I already have that will be staple pieces for me. I don’t own much in the accessory department, and I’m itching to have more pieces that make outfits look more put together without having to put in a lot of effort.
Here are the accessory items that are on my must-have list while crafting my ideal capsule wardrobe.
Sleek black backpack
There’s something about a sleek black bag that makes every outfit better. I love the addition of a sleek backpack when I’m going to a coffee shop to do some work. It goes with everything and adds a little edginess.
Aluminum free, high quality earrings
I didn’t wear earrings for over a decade. Miraculously, my ear piercings never closed up. So in an effort to add a little something to my style, I wanted to try wearing statement earrings again.
I decided to try these hypoallergenic earrings from Tini Lux and it has seriously elevated my style. It’s such a simple way to change things up and make your minimalist wardrobe look even more sophisticated and unique. It looks like you put in maximum effort, even though it takes a few seconds.
Like a lot of people, my ears are sensitive and it was part of the reason I stopped wearing earrings. Tini Lux is made with people like me in mind. They’re light, comfortable, and don’t bother my ears at all.
Tini Lux has affordable earrings with everything from studs, hoops, tassels, and statement earrings. I love supporting high quality and up-and-coming brands; Jackie Burke started Tini Lux in 2017 and is killing it with earrings that feel luxurious. I’m wearing the 14k gold plated earrings in the donuts style any chance I get and even my boyfriend gushes when I wear them.

Scarves
There’s so many ways to tie a scarf to make it look different. When you have a limited amount of clothes, it helps to have scarves that you can alter your usual outfits. I have a lot of neutral, gray scarves that go with almost all my clothing. Scarves are also a great opportunity to add some color to an otherwise neutral wardrobe.
Neutral colored fedora hat / straw hat
I feel so put together when I wear my fedora-style hat in the fall and winter. It makes me feel Instagram ready.
If you live near the beach, straw hats are such an easy way to add some life to your summer looks. I find spring and summer to be the most challenging as far as spicing up style goes. I love rompers and dresses for my summer capsule wardrobe, and I’m dreaming of adding a cute straw hat to add something a little extra to an otherwise simple outfit.
Watch
Confession: I don’t remember ever wearing a watch. I had a Fitbit for awhile, and that’s the closest I’ve come. I’ve been wanting, for awhile now, to purchase a nice watch. It seems pointless, as I definitely wouldn’t need it for the time, but I love the way they look.
Sunglasses
Most of us likely have a pair of sunglasses, especially if you’re living in sunny Southern California like me, but I think investing in a unique or classic pair of sunglasses that fits your aesthetic is essential. For the longest time, I would lose or break my sunnies all the time so I wouldn’t allow myself to splurge on a nice pair. My latest sunglasses were bought super cheap at Marshalls years ago and are still with me so I think I’ve proven myself enough to buy a nice pair.
Dainty everyday necklace
I’ve been looking to find a simple, staple necklace that means something to me. I think it’s the most essential item to accessorize a capsule wardrobe. While it’s nice to add accessories that make your wardrobe look and feel different, it’s also great to have items that don’t come off your body. They’re a part of your look and it’s a piece that you treasure and can help you feel grounded.
High quality belt
A faux leather belt is on my list of items I still need to get. I feel like belts can add a surprising amount of style to an outfit. You might also opt for a thick brown belt to go with blue jeans.
Crossbody or clutch
I use a larger bag, day-to-day, but I think it’s important to have a small bag for events where it’s not ideal to lug around a huge tote.
Minimalism might not be for everyone, but I think the practice of intentionality in all areas of your life is applicable for all of us. So, maybe we don’t all want only 33 items in our wardrobe. But we can think consciously about what we include in our wardrobe. I hope this list helps you pair down and add only the essentials that will help you boost your wardrobe, especially if like me, you’re working to make your style better this year.
